Very Good Gardening at Smallfields

Post 26: Harvests are coming in!

I’m starting to get daily harvests and I could not be happier!

This was yesterday’s:

Lettuce, radish, spinach, strawberries and itty bitty broccolis

And then this was today’s:

So much delicious lettuce!!

I used all of this lettuce to make my lunches for the week.

I picked my very first strawberry on Thursday.

And since then, I’ve had more and more each day.

I think that I’ll be overrun with strawberries within the next week.

Peas are really ramping up. I think I’ll be able to start picking them starting tomorrow.

Dwarf Snap Peas

I was able to harvest all of these radishes from my school’s garden. I gave each of my student helpers a radish to take home. I hope they were as excited as I was!

The roses are in full bloom, though I haven’t had the courage to cut any yet.

Raspberries are looking great! There are even more than I thought!

Black Raspberries

I have a banana pepper! It’s still super small but it won’t stay that way for long.

Our cherokee purple tomato plants have a few flowers. They are much stronger than last year’s plants.

All of our melons are sprouting. We won’t be able to harvest from these for a few months but it’s still so excited to see.

Lastly, a few of our pepper plants were eaten by cut worms. They like to “cut” (or chew, or saw, or massacre…) the plants at the base of the stem. I feel grateful that we were able to identify the problem. Each plant now has a plant “collar” around them to hopefully prevent this from happening again.

See the cut worm at the base of the leaves?

Fortunately for me, I still had some replacements so there wasn’t much lost.

I can’t wait to show you the strawberry pics next week! And by then I should have a “Harvest Count” part of my blog up and running. I might not post until Monday because it’s Memorial Day weekend but I’ll get it done!
