Very Good Gardening at Smallfields

Post 23: Over Watering

I’ve shed more than a few tears over today’s Friday Fail.

I made the classic mistake of overwatering my seedlings.

I also think I may have used the wrong potting soil because it just doesn’t drain like the other soil I’ve used. I think I’m at the point where I need to start mixing my own…

Every plant reacted differently to this mistake.

The peppers (about 2/3 of them) just stopped growing. I think I’m going to have to repot these in better potting soil soon.

The flowers and herbs were ok but their growth was definitely stunted.

The tomatoes…. 🙁

They continued to grow but over the last few days I have seen the bottom leaves start to fall off.

Dead Tomato Leaf

Ok some of you might judge me for this but I cried.

I have been growing these plants for almost 2 months and I babied them every step of the way. Now the leaves are yellowing and falling off because of a mistake I made.

This one was dead so I showed how easy it is to touch them and they fall right off

In the next video you can see that the leaf and stem on the right are both very yellow. They are unhealthy and would fall off on their own with or without my help. Once they get like this there is no saving them.

So sad.

The only silver lining I can think of is that I was most likely going to take those bottom leaves off anyways when I plant them. I like to plant them pretty deep into the ground.

The issue is though, if they are this little and losing leaves already, is the whole plant dying? Even typing that made my anxiety spike.

Don’t mind me, I’ll be crying in the corner, watching my plants until it’s warm enough outside.
