Very Good Gardening at Smallfields

Post 22: Growth

I recently went away for 3 days leaving behind my precious seedlings.

I know what all you non-plant people are thinking, “It’s just 3 days!”

My response to you is first: “Why are you reading this blog if you don’t love plants as much as the rest of us!?”

Second: “I really didn’t want to keep the lights, fans, and heating mats plugged in while we were gone. So the baby plants weren’t getting their optimal conditions for 72 hours.”

This was a good opportunity to see what 3 days growth would look like.

Some of the itty bitty plants didn’t make much visible growth.

But I think I’ve discovered that once plants reach a certain size, their growth increases dramatically.

Here are some results:

(All pics will be left, 3 days ago and right, today)

Peppers
Zinnias and Tomatoes
Basils

Tomato fruit grows very fast

I also have some blueberry and strawberry flowers!

Strawberries. Each flower will turn into a berry
Blueberries. Each flower will turn into a berry. There are about 100 in this picture

Potatoes are popping up

Now that the potato tops have emerged, I will be covering them every time we have a frost warning. Like tonight.

And our peas, carrots, lettuce, and onions are super happy.

Our temps will be dipping over the next few days but then I think we’re in for some beautiful spring weather. I know that will make all the plants happy! Happy Easter 🙂
