Very Good Gardening at Smallfields

Post 14: Changing over my AeroGarden

I was gifted an AeroGarden for Christmas. I had no idea how much I would love this thing.

It comes with pods, soil inserts, fertilizer, and starter seeds. This particular one came with Genovese basil, Thai basil, dill, parsley, thyme, and peppermint. Everything sprouted except the mint so I replaced the seeds with cilantro (I use more of that in my kitchen anyways).

In less than two months these herbs have given me anywhere between 5-10 harvests. I had no idea it would be this successful.

I really wanted to try to plant some tomatoes and lettuce in my AeroGarden but I didn’t want to sacrifice my herbs. So, I transplanted them into 6-inch pots that are currently hanging out on my windowsill.

This is the process that I took.

First, take a look at all of these roots!

I thought that they would get tangled in the tank of the system but they were very easy to pull out.

I cut around the sides and pulled the bottom half out through the roots.

Then I replanted them all into these pots and they are sitting pretty on my windowsill.

Then my adorable assistants helped me to plant dwarf tomatoes, lettuce, a hot pepper (that I’m just starting), and more cilantro into new pods.

I labeled them all and now I just have to wait for things to grow!
