Very Good Gardening at Smallfields

Post 8: Carrots

This time last year I pulled about 40 good-sized carrots. This year, about 20.

But I’m still counting this year as a success.

So, today’s “What Went Well Wednesday” is Carrots.

Before my first season, I believed these things about carrots:
1. Easy to grow
2. Grown in the summer
3. Orange

Wrong
Wrong
Sometimes Wrong

When I figured out the correct growing conditions for carrots, I started to see progress.

I planted these carrots in mid-September 2021. There was still a pepper plant in that bed at the time so some of the little seedlings were shaded. Carrots like the shade sometimes but not when the daylight is decreasing.

So between sowing the seeds a few weeks later and planting under another plant, I didn’t get as many this year. But the ones I have gotten are beautiful.

There is nothing like a fresh carrot from your backyard garden.

So sweet, so crunchy.

There were 20-30 little seedlings left in the cold frame. Now that we have more than 10 hours of daylight per day, they should start to grow again.

Yes, those are weeds in there as well

Maybe I’ll get lucky and have another late-winter harvest.

I’ll keep you posted.
