Very Good Gardening at Smallfields

Post 1: Seed to Produce

Ever since I was little, I have been fascinated by how a tiny seed turns into something huge and alive. When I started gardening in 2020 (I promise it had nothing to do with a pandemic), I was very intimidated by starting plants from seed but I was willing to try. Like most, I tried the cheapest method available to me with very little success. I have a big, beautiful, southern-facing window that I placed my little egg carton seedlings (if you can even call them that) next to.

Even though I was able to get some basil, oregano, and mint from these, it was still harder than it should have been because I didn’t invest in any of the basics. Not even a grow light. The next year I was willing to spend some money to do it right and I ended up with hundreds of healthy seedlings.

The first picture was taken at the same point in the growing process as the others. I instantly saw a difference. My second year seedlings thrived. All of them.

And to see the process of seed to plant to produce is one of the coolest experiences ever.

One of my plans for this garden season is to document this process more clearly. I will follow a few plants from seed to produce and show exactly how they grow and the little missteps along the way. It’s a lot of work but the produce at the end makes it all worth it.
