Very Good Gardening at Smallfields

Post 10: Strawberries 2021

Last year my strawberry bed exploded. It was incredible.

I kept getting bowl after bowl, looking like this:

Honestly, they tasted even better than they looked.

I counted about 1,100 strawberries in total. All in one 6’x4′ raised bed.

This year I have a feeling there will be even more. Strawberries grow like crazy if left unchecked which… oops.

Our bed looks like this right now:

If you’re having trouble figuring out where the bed ends and the “mulch” begins, you’re not alone.

This season I’ll be doing a few things differently.

First I will collect all of the strawberries, like these:

Then I’ll be doing a little (a lot) of maintenance by ripping up as many plants as I can that are not in the actual bed.

Then, throughout the season I will be sure to cut off any “runners” that I see. These runners are the stems that you see that come up and reach out. They will root close to the original plant and create a new one. Which is how I ended up with hundreds of plants when I started with 35.

Either way, I’m calling these strawberries a success because look at these beauties!

Even if, maybe, they are a success that needs to be reigned in a little bit.
