Very Good Gardening at Smallfields

Post 4: Winter Harvest

My first year I was all in. I read a book about gardening all year long and I thought, why not?

So my amazing husband designed and built me two cold frames.

Before we put the tops on at the end of October, I planted tons of lettuce, arugula, and carrots on September 1, 2020.

The results were incredible.

We had a Christmas Eve Salad that year from this lettuce.

In February of 2021, I harvested all of the remaining carrots and some of the lettuce.

Then in September of 2021, I got a little busy and I didn’t sow the carrots and lettuce until 9/15/21. I think that’s why we didn’t get the same results as the year before but I’m still very happy with what we’ve gotten so far.

Around Valentine’s Day I’ll harvest most of the carrots and see what we got this year.

No matter what, it’s pretty cool to eat fresh lettuce and carrots in the middle of winter.
