Very Good Gardening at Smallfields

Post 19: Spring Freeze

We are expecting temps in the low 20’s for the next three nights.

Welcome to Springtime in Maryland.

Of course, everything that I’ve planted has started popping up. So, I need to cover it all to make sure it survives. Even though cool weather crops can handle colder weather and light freezes, low 20’s or teens can be pretty damaging.

The first thing I covered was my cold frames. I pulled the pea supports out and placed them right on.

The GreenStalk planter has a whole bunch of things sprouting.

I bought two cheap twin sheet protectors that zipped on the end. I placed them on the planter, one with zipping from right and the other zipping from the left.

As I was starting to cover the cabbage, broccoli and brussel sprouts, the wind picked up (which made tacking down a light piece of cloth very challenging…) and then it started to SNOW! Ugh.

But I was able to nail down all of the covers relatively tight. We’ll see if they survive the night.

I did cover the other BS’s but I guess I forgot to take a picture of it

Then I placed all of the pots into the shed. This has worked out well for us in the past. If I find that they take a little too much damage, I’ll bring them inside for tomorrow night.

Anyone else looking forward to some warmer weather?
